Piano Lessons

Royal Conservatory of Music

Piano lessons are at the heart of our studio instruction.   Donald will guide and encourage students of all ages and levels through a creative approach to the piano that focuses on all elements of music making.

Through weekly lessons students will discover and refine their understanding of the many unique aspects of the piano and music making such as a sound approach to the keyboard, secure rhythm, musical style, and other important skills including improvisation and composition.

Theory will be incorporated into all lessons, however for more advanced theory levels, a separate theory lesson is encouraged.

Donald can help you achieve your musical goals whether it be working toward a Royal Conservatory of Music exam, the local music festival, participation in local student recitals, or learning the piano for pure enjoyment and the love of music.

Donald is experienced in many styles of piano playing, and can tailor a course of instruction that includes pop and jazz styles, including jazz theory.

Piano lessons are taught in either Stratford or Charlottetown.

“Music and rhythm find their way into the secret places of the soul”  Plato

Organ Lessons

Anyone who has piano background can take organ lessons as well.   The technique is different, but in the end, one instrument compliments the other.    There is a shortage of trained organists for churches of all denominations.

The Juget-Sinclair organ in the Studio was handcrafted in Montreal in 2002 and is only the  17th instrument created by these Quebec artisans.   The owners and principal builders are Stephen Sinclair and Denis Juget.    They apprenticed with Canadian organ builders Karl Wilhelm and Hellmuth Wolff, and are now major Canadian organ builders in their own right.  You can see their latest installation, OPUS 50 in Hong Kong, China on their website : http://www.juget-sinclair.com/juget_sinclair_e.html.

Jazz and Pop Piano Styles

Donald can guide you in any number of jazz and pop piano or organ styles.  With over 35 years of experience playing in various styles, he can lead you as you discover jazz and pop theory and playing techniques.

Donald uses a variety of resources to teach the fundamentals of pop and jazz harmony all of which helps focus the learning on different musical genres and leads to greater understanding of improvisation.

The Steinway “B” is often referred to as “the perfect piano” by Steinway experts.   This instrument is well maintained and has a very warm, rich tone.    The Steinway is the centrepiece of our teaching studio.

“Teaching music is not my main purpose.  I want to make good citizens.   If children hear fine music from the day of their birth and learn to play it, they develop sensitivity, discipline and endurance.   They get a beautiful heart.”         Shinichi Suzuki (Founder of the Suzuki method)
